Before leaving Korea after medical care, check what is completed, still pending, and arranged for later. Ask how outstanding results will be reviewed, which records you need, and how to collect them. Write down any follow-up appointments and discuss your travel plans with your treating team. This checklist cannot determine whether you are fit to fly or replace that team’s clinical advice.
Identify every result or appointment still outstanding
List the tests and procedures you had, then note the status of each item. After a test is complete, you may still need to receive the report and discuss the result with a clinician.
Use this table for your own notes:
| Item | Status to record | Remaining arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Test or imaging study | Completed, scheduled, or not performed | Any appointment still required |
| Report | Available, pending, or not yet requested | When it will be ready and how to check |
| Clinical explanation | Discussed or still needed | Who will explain it and through which agreed route |
| Record copy | Requested, ready, or collected | Language, medium, and collection instructions |
| Follow-up visit | Confirmed or unresolved | Date, location, and the team responsible |
Do not fill a missing result date with your own estimate. Ask the treating team to identify which items remain open and what to do if a result is not ready before departure. Keep the answer alongside the relevant test name and date.
Asan Medical Center’s international-patient guide asks patients needing record copies to request them before leaving Korea, explaining that arranging them afterward can be more complicated. It also describes the nurse arranging the next appointment and explaining future tests after consultation. At Asan, raise questions about results or follow-up during this discussion, particularly if you are leaving soon.
Request the material your next clinician or recipient needs
Make a document list around the next use of the records. A consultation summary, laboratory result, written imaging report, image dataset, and medical certificate are different requests.
SNUH’s documentation page lists clinical notes and several types of results separately from medical certificates and image copies. It also directs requests for a new medical certificate to the doctor during consultation. Identify any such need while there is still an opportunity to discuss it with the treating team.
For the detailed collection questions, use the medical records, results, and image-copy guide. If a school, employer, or insurer needs a particular statement, the certificate and doctor’s note guide helps match the request to the required information.
Keep the recipient’s requested language and format with each item. Do not assume that requesting a record also requests an English translation or a new clinical statement.
Settle collection before relying on remote delivery
Confirm which records can be collected, by whom, and in which format. Samsung Medical Center’s documentation instructions, for example, specify hard-copy medical records and CD/DVD image copies collected in person after payment. Check your hospital’s own collection and delivery options before planning to receive records from abroad.
For each requested item, confirm:
- The required identification or authorization documents.
- The collection point and any separate payment step.
- Whether the item is ready, or how readiness will be confirmed.
- What approved alternative exists if you cannot collect it yourself.
Use the branch, building, and reception-location guide for a separate collection visit. If another person may need to act for you, obtain the hospital’s current authorization instructions before assuming the arrangement is possible.
Keep one follow-up note with the open questions
Record the treating department, the appointment or patient reference the hospital asks you to use, the agreed follow-up channel, and the matters still awaiting an answer. Keep the note with your collected records.
A useful handover note says:
Care received: [provider, department, visit dates]
Still pending: [test/report or clinical question]
Agreed next step: [responsible team, channel, timing if confirmed]
Documents collected: [items, dates, language and medium]
Arrangements unresolved: [questions requiring a reply]
If you need care after returning home, ask your treating team which records to bring to the next consultation. Check whether remote follow-up is available and what conditions apply. Before departure, write down how you will receive pending records and the details of any follow-up appointments.
