A hospital-based international healthcare centre in Seoul may offer an initial medical assessment as well as help arranging specialist care. A regular department provides specialty care; the international centre may help coordinate an appointment there. Ask who will assess you first, who will arrange any referral, and which service to contact if you use NHIS, private insurance, or self-payment.
Identify the clinical appointment and the support around it
An international centre may provide care and help coordinate other appointments. This guide covers centres within hospitals in Seoul. Ask whether you will see a centre doctor first, attend a specialist directly, or need a separate assessment before another appointment.
These roles help you interpret the hospital’s reply:
| Role to identify | What to ask about your visit |
|---|---|
| Initial clinician | Who will assess the concern you described, and in which clinic? |
| Receiving specialist or department | Is a specialty appointment already arranged, or will an assessment determine the next step? |
| Coordinator or patient-services team | Which bookings, records, registration, and transfers between departments will this team help arrange? |
| Language support | How will the consultation, tests, and later explanations be communicated? |
Check whether the reply identifies the clinic or clinician and confirms an appointment, or says that an assessment is still needed. Keep the clinician or clinic, appointment status, and next step together in your notes. For a fuller check of consultation language and interpretation, use the English-language hospital support guide.
Compare the pathways described by Seoul hospitals
The following official examples were checked on 28 October 2026. They show how care and coordination fit together at each institution.
Samsung Medical Center: its International Healthcare Center overview describes primary care, specialty services through visiting physicians and focused clinics, and coordination of referrals to its advanced specialty centres. The page also describes assessment by primary care physicians when the appropriate care pathway is uncertain. Ask whether your requested appointment is with an IHC doctor or another specialty service.
Asan Medical Center: its international healthcare services page describes primary treatment and referrals to specialty departments. It separately describes coordinators helping with interpretation and processes such as appointments, examinations, and billing. A useful enquiry identifies both the medical appointment and the support that continues if care moves to another department.
Seoul National University Hospital: its NHIS-holder outpatient page publishes a separate pathway for people using Korean National Health Insurance. It explains referral requirements and a family medicine assessment route involving advance booking and a separate charge. Check the instructions for your payment route rather than assuming that every foreign patient uses the same international-patient arrangements.
Contact the hospital to check appointment availability, whether it can accept your request, and the arrangements for your visit.
Confirm eligibility and charges alongside the booking route
Tell the receiving team whether you expect to use NHIS, private insurance, or self-payment. Ask whether you should start with the international centre, a general appointment service, or the intended department, and what referral or prior assessment that route requires.
The referral-letter guide explains what to prepare for an NHIS visit. Asking the international centre for an appointment does not replace an NHIS referral if the hospital requires one for your visit.
Ask how charges would be handled for an initial assessment, a later specialist consultation, interpretation, and requested documents. This is a list of items to clarify, not a statement that every centre charges each fee. For self-payment without NHIS, use the hospital estimate-request guide to record what is included and what remains uncertain.
Save your appointment details
Before treating an enquiry as a confirmed appointment, complete this short note from the hospital’s reply:
First appointment: [clinic or clinician, date, and confirmation status]
Next department: [already booked / awaiting assessment or referral]
Support: [who coordinates the next booking and communication arrangements]
Preparation and payment: [required records or referral, submission instructions, and charges still to confirm]
Follow-up: [which team provides results or arranges the next visit]
Use the first appointment-message guide if you have yet to make an enquiry. Send requested documents through the hospital’s official submission route.
This guide explains published service roles and visit preparation. It does not recommend a hospital, determine an individual’s care pathway, or guarantee a booking or insurance benefit.
