Health Checkups in Korea for Foreigners: What to Compare Before Booking

Before booking a health checkup in Korea, compare included and optional tests, costs and insurance, preparation instructions, and how you will receive results.

In this guide 4 sections
  1. Check which centre and service you are booking
  2. Compare included items and additions on the same basis
  3. Obtain preparation instructions for the selected tests
  4. Compare results, language, and follow-up as separate items

Before booking a health checkup in Korea, compare the service and tests, how you will pay, and what happens after the screening. Tell the provider whether you want a screening package, a service covered by insurance, or a consultation about a current concern. Ask which service matches your request before comparing packages or arranging travel.

Check which centre and service you are booking

Different services within one hospital can have different tests and payment rules. Samsung Medical Center’s screening appointment page distinguishes its self-pay Health Promotion Center packages from its International Healthcare Center’s basic screening route with insurance and a required Guarantee of Payment. It also states that the package route does not provide diagnostics, second opinions, or primary care.

These are Samsung’s service options; other providers may organize checkups differently. Describe your purpose and any current concern when asking which service to book, and get the centre name and service description in the reply.

If you plan to use insurance, check coverage for the specific service and package, even if the hospital accepts your insurer for other care. The NHIS and travel-insurance comparison guide explains what to ask about coverage and hospital billing.

Compare included items and additions on the same basis

Compare base packages and optional tests separately, using each provider’s current test list and written estimate. Samsung’s selection page, for example, lists package choices and additional tests separately.

This worksheet can organize two offers without selecting medical tests for you:

Comparison pointInformation to obtain for each offer
Service identityCentre, programme, version or confirmation date
Included testsThe exact list for the offered programme
Optional itemsItems proposed separately and their additional charges
Procedure-related chargesWhether applicable preparation, sedation or further work is included or separately assessed
Clinical explanationWho explains the findings and what consultation is included
Total and limitsThe confirmed estimate, its conditions, and what could change it

Discuss suitable tests with the provider’s clinical team using your history and purpose. A longer list is not enough information to choose a programme. For the financial comparison, the hospital estimate guide explains how to identify included and additional charges without relying on a national average.

Obtain preparation instructions for the selected tests

Once you have chosen the programme, request its preparation instructions. SNUH Gangnam Center’s published checkup process separates reservation confirmation, preparation materials, the checkup, and results consultation. Its materials include a questionnaire and instructions for the tests.

Tell the team about medicines, allergies, relevant history, and any circumstances it asks you to disclose. Obtain its instructions for food and drink, medicines, samples, arrival, and any procedure-specific accompaniment or transport requirement. Use those instructions for your selected tests; this comparison worksheet is not a medication-change or fasting plan.

Check the appointment confirmation against the preparation instructions, including the centre and arrival point. Resolve a missing instruction before assuming that another hospital’s checkup schedule applies.

Compare results, language, and follow-up as separate items

Ask what language the report uses, how the findings will be explained, and how you will receive the report. Samsung’s screening FAQ specifies Korean/English official reports and distinguishes those reports from translated physician summaries. The same page says its centre does not provide NHIS checkups and does not handle insurance claims. Check these conditions when considering that centre’s packages.

SNUH Gangnam Center’s process describes results consultation separately from the checkup and explains in-person, telephone, and online arrangements. Ask your chosen provider to confirm the language, timing, and delivery method for your booking.

Before finalizing, record when and how results will be explained, what copies you can receive, and how further clinical care would be arranged if needed. If departure may precede a result or follow-up appointment, use the before-leaving-Korea records and results guide to keep pending items and agreed next steps together.
